Days OFF! ... or what Pitchcare readers get up to out of office hours

RYAN GOLDING: Assistant Groundsman, Leeds Rugby: I had my first scrape with groundsmanship when I did my Year 10 work experience at Arsenal Football Club with Paul Burgess and Paul Ashcroft

unfortunately, for them, having to put up with me for two weeks! This is where I fell in love with the job. After writing many letters, I joined the groundstaff at Leeds rugby as a bright eyed 16 year old and haven’t looked back since. As it stands I have been with the team at Headingley for nearly four years

now and have loved every minute of it, with some extremely memorable days and nights with both Rugby teams (Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Tykes) playing at the stadium. My job involves me maintaining the three sites that are in our remit but, specifically, being the assistant at the main pitch at Headingley stadium. This includes trying to look after my boss Jason Booth! The challenge at Headingley stadium is immense and I feel I am developing well in every aspect of groundsmanship, not only in a brilliant atmosphere and surroundings but with plenty of support too. I attend Askham Bryan College in York where I have achieved my NVQ Sportsturf Level 2, and am in the process of completing my NVQ Level 3. When I am not working, I have to remember I am still a young lad and most people will be able to find me playing some sort of football. I have had the numerous trials at football league clubs and was semi-pro for 2 months

last year with plans to go back next season but, in the end, this year I have plumped for the enjoyment factor and turn out at right- back for my local team in the Leeds Sunday Alliance League. It’s actually quite a good standard and I get picked for the representative team on a regular basis. When I am not playing, you can also find me watching my beloved Leeds United probably losing, home and away. On the rare occasions not involving football, you’ll find me sampling the fine delights of the Leeds nightlife, usually on the club dance floor to the modern dance, house, trance and electro music. I also attend many of the dance festivals throughout the country - sorry all you more mature boys, none of that Marvin Gaye for me! My plans for this year are to complete my NVQ Level 3, complete my visit to Prague and bring myself on in the job even further by gaining more valuable experience. There is always room to learn no matter what!
