The Art of Natural Foods: Simple, Wholesome and Healthy

hen pressed, most admit they eat too many potato chips and pieces of cake. Where did all the

vegetables go? The art of eating naturally has been derailed by fast food companies, frozen dinners and snack packs. How do we get back on track and start eating wholesome foods again? It’s simple re- ally, just look to your local market for the answer. Walking the aisles of the produce section, the senses are greeted by a boun- ty of vibrant colors and pleasing odors. All the vegetables are natural, and come straight from the farm or garden, ready for eating. Many shoppers grab a few staples and then move on to the middle aisles for their canned goods, boxed lunches, frozen entrees and coffee beans; missing out on the possibilities and pleasures of eating naturally. There are so many natu- ral foods that are more enjoyable than tasteless meals from a box. The meat sec- tions of many markets have been reduced to packaged cuts, with less emphasis on local butchers. Lean animal protein is one of the most natural foods on the planet. So why are we moving towards process- ing and packaging our meats, when fresh meats from the market are so healthy? It is truly easy to get back to the basics and start eating nourishing foods again. Wholesome, all natural foods are readily available, familiar in their nature and simple to prepare. It just takes a little time at your neighborhood market. Walk- ing through the produce section can open our eyes to a whole new natural food world. The meat counters offer a selection of lean animal proteins that are whole- some and nourishing. Whole grains and healthy oils are there, seemingly in hiding amongst the jars and cans and packages of processed products. It may take a keen eye to spot these beneficial items. Natural foods are simple. They are fresh, clean, delicious and naturally wholesome. They are free of chemicals, additives, preservatives and are unrefined. They contain the essential vitamins, min- erals, antioxidants and fiber needed for proper assimilation and digestion. Simple

is good, right? We can pick up some vegetables and feel good about what we are putting into our bodies. At the local market, natural foods come in a variety of forms.

Health giving foods are common items we see every day, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, healthy oils and lean meats. These foods, although familiar, are often over looked in favor of “convenience.” How- ever, with the addition of a few herbs and spices, nature’s foods are far more deli- cious than the highly processed contents of the cans and boxes. Whole, natural foods are nutrition-

ally rich foods. They support a healthy immune system and help prevent heart disease and other illnesses. It is important to look at our eating habits and see where we can change our choices to healthier alternatives. We don’t have to change our whole diet; we can start by simply adding some fresh vegetables to our meals. Soon
