9 ISSUE 15 • 2010 • WWW.FIA.UK.COM ANOTHER FACE TO A NAME
As a marketer you’re used
to using words as a tool. Are there any words or phrases you overuse? Anyone who spends any time with me knows that I’m always saying ‘cool’. I use it like a full stop, a pause, even as a kick into action sometimes!
Did you have a nickname
at school? I never really had one at
school but I’ve been given many nicknames throughout my career. I think my favourite so far is from a Geordie motorcycle journalist friend who calls me ‘Becky Booster’ (said with a Geordie accent). To most friends I’m simply Bex.
What did you want to be
when you grew up? I wanted to be an airline
pilot. Flying runs in my family; my uncle fl ew stunt planes, my aunt is a Captain for the world’s favourite airline and my brother also fl ies. We just love fl ying! My uncle’s death in a plane crash when I was a child didn’t stop that love (he died practicing a loop-the- loop); it was my height (or lack of it) that stopped that career in its tracks. At the time I was deemed too short to reach the controls.
What is your greatest fear?
Becky Reid is the FIA’s Marketing Manager and has been with the Association for nearly two years now. Here we get to know a little about her.
Dying without having
achieved everything I want to.
Do you have any strange phobias? Not really. I have tended
to conquer fears by tackling them head on; I recently held a tarantula in my hand which signalled the end of my dislike of spiders. I’ve always liked the fear factor you get with scary things. It’s not a phobia but I do have an intense dislike of marmite; I’m defi nitely in the hate camp!
What is the trait you most
dislike in yourself? The inability to lie in at
the weekend whilst having no such problem during the week!
And in others? The attitude that life owes us something. Some people go through life thinking that it owes them; you get out of life what you put in to it.
If you could choose, what
would be your perfect day? No time schedules, no
deadlines, no phones. Just the hot sun, my man, food, drink and friends.
Is there anything special
that you’d like to achieve in your life?
I’m pretty driven so I have
achieved many things that I have wanted to so far – riding a Harley across California, riding the Great Ocean Road in Australia, climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge... but there’s still lots left to do and see! I’d like to travel on the Transiberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing and I would love to wing-walk amongst other things.
What is your most prized
possession? A small scruffy teddy bear
that my uncle gave to me. What gadget couldn’t
you live without? My iPod. Music has always
been important to me. There’s a song for every moment and every mood and as Shakespeare said ‘if music be the food of love...’
What is your favourite
food and/or your favourite restaurant?
I’m a real foodie, I’m
always thinking about it! Savoury food only though, I don’t have a sweet tooth and
haven’t eaten puddings for over ten years. My favourite food has to be Thai and Vietnamese closely followed by Indian, Chinese, Mexican, tapas, Italian...oh all of it! I have a good list of local restaurants which are a closely guarded secret as I want to keep them for myself ;-)
Which famous person,
from history or now, would you like to have dinner with? From history it would
be Henry VIII; being a local resident I’d be curious to fi nd out what he thinks of Hampton Court as it is today. From current
times...hmm, Brad Pitt or Antonio Banderas please! (is that shallow?)
And fi nally, they say we
all have 15 minutes of fame. Have you had yours yet? I think my fi rst bit of fame
came when I won a Sindy House in a local paper’s colouring competition at the age of about fi ve. Since then I’d say I’ve had more than my fair share of fame throughout my career with numerous TV appearances (all in the name of work) but I’m not done with the fame-thing yet!
