prior to calling the Fire and Rescue Service has been implemented in a number of the larger buildings and is being extended to several others. These procedures have a very tangible impact on Fire and Rescue Service call-outs which is an important benefi t in itself although Suzanne recognises that they deal with the consequences rather than the root cause of the problem. Many staff have now been trained as Evacuation Marshals [with the need identifi ed to train more] and the College’s Fire Safety Offi cers remain active in raising awareness of the false alarms issue to key College staff on a monthly basis, this including distribution of up-to- date activation data. 2010 will prove another
pivotal year for the College in its quest to further reduce the incidence of false alarms. Based on the fi gures on prevalent causes, work will continue to reduce cooking activations and those from particulates and water leaks. The control and management of building works is another high priority action as is the need to continue to replace older FD&A systems and improve further the
management of information and activities in buildings. From a specifi c buildings perspective, immediate attention will be paid to 17 buildings that are currently at performance level 2 or 3 with reference to the CFOA False Alarms Policy; each has been analysed in detail and remedial actions identifi ed. One such building was responsible for 36 false alarms in 2009 and it has been agreed that funding will be made available for a new FD&A system to be installed in 2010. Once again, the excellent
work of Suzanne Whitehead and her team, and that of FIA members Drax and Honeywell in supporting their endeavours, has continued to drive down false alarms in the King’s College buildings. It confi rms the viability of an evidence-based approach based on the gathering of detailed and reliable data on an on-going basis, the analysis of that information and the prioritisation of the appropriate remedial actions required. The FIA is delighted to highlight the activities at King’s College as an example of what can be achieved in reducing false alarms if there is a concerted will to do so.
