High-output multi-message Maxi Fire-Cryer® Voice Sounders from Vimpex Limited are being used to enhance safety for maintenance staff working on Sydney Harbour Bridge. Workers undertaking regular maintenance tasks such as painting can now be safely evacuated in the event of an emergency through pre-programmed messages that are broadcast from the Maxi Fire-Cryers®. Sydney Harbour’s famous bridge is an important transport link

carrying rail, vehicles and pedestrians, as well as being a tourist attraction. Its steel structure, which is locally nicknamed “The Coathanger” because of its arch-based design, needs constant maintenance. The challenge was to keep the maintenance staff informed of any emergency situation whilst working in a noisy, outdoor environment. Portcullis Perimeter Security Pty Ltd in partnership with Vimpex developed a wireless voice evacuation solution to meet this requirement. Ten Maxi Fire-Cryers®, each with four messages, have been installed in the maintenance cribs and active re-painting areas, which are relocated from time to time. The Maxi Fire-Cryer®

outputs 116dBA and features a fully weatherproof enclosure making it ideal for external use in large open areas. A specially designed wireless control panel connects to Vimpex’s Voice Message Controller, which in turn controls the voice message sequencing to each of the Maxi Fire-Cryers®. Each voice message can be individually activated from 4 switches remotely located in the Harbour Bridge control room. Two of the messages are for emergencies and are preceded with the appropriate Australian standard evacuation or alert tone. The other two messages are used to notify the start and fi nish of a fi re alarm test.

WAGNER Launches CPD Seminar to Demystify New European Standard for Aspirating Smoke

WAGNER UK has launched a series of CPD Seminars to help fi re system designers, installers and consultants better understand the implications of a new European Standard that has changed the way Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems have to be designed and installed. EN54 Part 20 is the new European product standard for

Aspirating Smoke Detectors (ASD). From July 2009 the vast majority of ASD systems installed in Europe will have to fully comply with this standard. The standard encompasses both the project design and the ASD systems installed. Since ASD systems, like other detectors for fi re detection systems, fall under the Construction Products Directive, compliance with EN 54 Part 20 is a prerequisite for CE marking. The standard introduces three classes for detector sensitivity,

Class A (high sensitivity), B (enhanced sensitivity) and C (normal sensitivity), allowing designers and installers to select the most suitable solution for their application. Class C, normal sensitivity,

is equivalent to traditional point detection. Class A and B provide much earlier smoke detection for more critical and demanding applications. The hour-long CPD Seminars clearly explain the implications of the new standard and what is required to design and install a compliant system. WAGNER UK can also deliver seminars at client’s premises, to suit their own timeframe, for example a presentation with lunch, or at WAGNER’s own offi ces where their comprehensive demonstration facilities can be utilised. For information on the CPD seminars please call WAGNER UK on 0870 333 6116 or email sales@wagner-uk.com.

Fire and security specialists STI (Europe) have extended their Alert Point range with the announcement of the Alert Point:Lite, which offers an ideal solution for smaller premises that require a simple and effective means of raising an alarm. Alert Point:Lite shares many of the features of the Alert Point, including a resettable operating element (with an activation warning fl ag), seven different alarm tones, a 100 dB integral sounder and a range of colours to suit different fi re, security, and safety applications. However, as a more cost effective option, it is a stand alone, battery powered alarm system (with low battery warning indication) whereas the Alert Point can also be linked to other devices. Ges Wallace, MD of STI (Europe), said –“The Alert Point is itself a simple alarm system that can satisfy the needs of many smaller establishments as they come to terms with meeting the requirements of the Fire Safety Order. However, from our market research we recognised that for some, connecting to other fi re alarm components such as detectors, call points, strobes or sounders is not necessary. We have therefore redeveloped

the Alert Point by removing some advanced features and creating a simplifi ed version for more basic applications for establishments that want a simple, cost effective means of raising an alarm, that requires no connectivity.” An optional extra available for the Alert Point and

Alert Point:Lite is the capacity to incorporate a beacon – an important measure in meeting the requirements of the Disabilities Discrimination Act (DDA) which recognises the needs of providing for those who are audibly impaired.
