incidents are more survivable. Mr Byrom said he was unsure if the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order was the long term solution and he felt that this is some way due to the fact that the Fire & Rescue Services are run by local authorities who do not all speak the same language. However, he believes that they are now working to a greater consistency. After the morning coffee break, six seminars

were run in two different rooms, allowing for delegates to make their own choices. The speakers included: • Martin Shipp, BRE Global on Modelling and Reconstruction for Fire Investigations • Robert Thilthorpe, Technical Manager, FIA on FIA Guidance Papers. How are they produced and which are the latest? • Hilary Ross, Bond Pearce LLP on FSO Prosecutions: The last year • Nick Ketteridge, Ultra Suppression Systems Ltd on Water Mist Fire Protection Systems: Installation and real world applications • Ed Lister, ADT Fire & Security on Services Directive: What does it mean to FIA members? • Bernard Laluvein, ADT Fire & Security Ltd on Visual Alarm Devices: Case studies in the fi eld of VAD Following these seminars delegates broke

for lunch and were treated to an air display by The Blades. Even on a grey and chilly day everyone was outside and eager to see the fl ight. The fl ying display was a great treat and it was accompanied by a commentary from a member of The Blades team, who described

exactly what was going on as all eyes were raised to the skies. After this exciting interlude the delegates

returned to the hangar for coffee and dessert (and a warm-up) before the business of the day continued. In the afternoon session a further six seminars

were held in the two rooms, before the fi nal break and a chance for delegates to network before returning home. The afternoon speakers were: • Alan Wells, Skills for Security – Apprenticeships: A teacher’s point of view • Alan Elder, Tyco Fire Suppression and Building Products – ‘Over & Under’ Pressure Venting • Dave Bartlett, Trinity Protection Systems – IFE Registration/Proof of Competence: A joint venture • Keith Goodall, Goodall Consultancy – F-Gas : An update for stakeholders • Colin Todd, CS Todd & Associates and Stephen Adams, BAFE – FIA Fire Risk Assessment Membership Criteria • Bob Whitely, Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions – Foams : A technical presentation on bio fuels/ class A

As the day drew to a close the delegates agreed that it had been a great success and were looking forward to seeing what next year had to offer. Should you wish to see what the speakers had to say the PowerPoint presentations, from all of the day’s speakers, are available on the FIA website at www.fi a.uk.com.
