ast year, journalist DeWayne Wickham posed the following question to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs: “Did the president get any invitations to speak at any HBCUs?” Wickham’s inquiry came after the White House announced that Presi- dent Obama would speak at the University of Notre Dame and Arizona State University.

L What a difference a year makes.

Obama has cleared up any questions about how his administration values HBCUs. The president spoke at Hampton University, first lady Michelle Obama addressed the University of Arkansas. This year, 11 his- torically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and at least 13 Hispanic- serving institutions (HSIs) hosted senior-level administration officials as commencement speakers.

“The number of Obama administration people speaking at HBCU and HSI commencements is unprecedented,” Dr. John Silvanus Wilson, execu- tive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, said at a recent Education Sector policy forum on educa- tional successes at minority-serving institutions.
