n A Half-Century Snapshot of the STEM Workforce, 1950 to 2000, a Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology report, the researchers noted employment in science, technology, engineering and math occupations in the United States grew more than three times as fast as the civilian labor force as a whole. During the 20th century, strong demand in the United States for STEM professionals fueled sig- nificant growth across science and technology. But updated data shows that while the scientific and technical workforce is still growing, it has been lagging behind the growth of the U.S. labor force as a whole.
