Enhancing Technology at the Retail Vision Europe show. The patented technology is said to picks up depth cues from the brain. It has been incorporated into screens which can be over- laid onto monitors and TVs to create depth to an image with- out recourse to 3D glasses. The company exhibited several new implementations of its tech- nology, including the V-Screen for Sony PSP and the Deep Screen for large displays and monitors. The £1 million agreement provides fast and efficient access to VC technologies for NHS trusts that are members of three collaborative procurement organisations: PRO-CURE, East of England and South East Coast NHS procurement hubs. As the contracted supplier, NHS trusts will be able to use Computacenter to supply, install and configure new video-confer- encing systems based on a range

survey by trade credit insur- er Atradius has found that CE retailers are looking for a sales uplift of up to 60% aris- ing from the World Cup. While the next few weeks or so could prove critical to sales of con- sumer durables, Atradius warns that the fall-off in consumer sales could be dramatic when the World Cup effect wears off.

of technologies. It will also pro- vide consultancy, training and support services as required and undertake a free assessment of trusts’ current VC facilities to ensure they are taking full advan- tage of their existing assets. Juliet Clark, public sec- tor director at Computacenter commented:“With NHS staff increasingly working in the community, videoconferencing provides an efficient and cost- effective platform for virtual meetings and education ses- sions. By reducing the need for travel between sites, NHS trusts can free up time and cut travel costs and carbon emissions.”

Gaming applications for 3D on the rise

atrik Pfandler, senior mar- ket analyst at Futuresource Consulting, reports that 3D is becoming increasingly impor- tant in the gaming world, with 3D compatibility a function of leading titles as we move for- ward.

P

From a hardware perspec- tive, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are essentially 3D-ready. Sony will release a dedicated 3D firmware update for the PS3 this summer. The first tranche of 3D gaming content is expected to be dis- tributed via download initially, with Sony releasing four games, including Wipeout, together

with the firmware update. Futuresource expects to see a significant proportion of disc- based games titles featuring a 3D option very soon, perhaps becoming prevalent by 2011. Nintendo is expected to announce details of its new 3DS device at next month’s E3 show. The portable gaming machine could be many consumers’ first experience of 3D gaming and will feature an auto stereoscopic 3D-enabled screen, negating the need for glasses.

Futuresource is hosting the Futuresource Entertainment Summit on 10-11 June 2010.

Marketing of CE packages has been extensive in the run up to the World Cup as vendors attempt the maximum from the strong market in the run-up to the event. Retailers of electrical goods are hoping for a strong performance from England, keeping national interest in the competition running high for as long as possible.

Marc Henstridge, head of risk for Atradius UK and Ireland said: “Businesses of all sizes are waiting for what we are labelling the ‘World Cup effect’ to kick in. Advertising linking products to the World Cup (albeit very tenu- ously) has already taken off, but consumer durables retailers are amongst those hoping for the greatest boost.”

“The longer England remain in the running, the bigger the potential boost to TV and relat- ed sales. Some businesses we have talked to are forecasting a sales growth as great as 60 percent from April to June, year- on-year.”

In 2006, the World Cup spurred a £1bn spending spree in the UK on televisions and electrical appliances alone.

A survey by trade credit insurer Atradius has found that CE retailers are looking for a sales uplift of up to 60% arising from the World Cup.

Telecoms and Media, over 20 million TV homes globally will be watching 3DTV within five years – equivalent to 1.6% of all homes. North America will lead the way in terms of number of 3DTV homes with 9.2 million, Western Europe will be the second largest region with 6.8 million and Asia Pacific third with 4.6 million.

World Cup 3D kick-off

A

ccording to the latest forecasts from Informa

“3D TV is set to increase in popularity over the next five years due a number of contribut- ing factors – a key reason being the push from content owners, broadcasters and pay TV plat- forms who are keen to drive adoption as they see this as a

potential growth area. Although the forecast figure seems quite low, the market will still be very immature by 2015, so signifi- cant opportunities exist beyond this date,” comments Simon Murray, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media. “This summer’s World Cup will provide an ideal plat- form for 3D programming, for example, FIFA and Sony have already announced that they will be showing 25 matches in 3D. With the possible exception of the Olympics, the World Cup is the most important showcase for new broadcast technology and it could potentially do for 3D TV, what Avatar did for 3D movies.”
