HOT GLASS ART!
A spectacular “hot glass” exhibition cre- ated in Ubud will go on show in Jakarta this month, attracting interest from Sotheby’s in London with its Stone Age theme.
Project leader, Ubud artist Ron Seivertson, collaborated with three “artist-in-residence” French volunteers - Julien Espagne, Regis Anchuelo, Francis Auboiron – to create 120 pieces for the exhibition, one of which – a spear – took the four artists and four assistants more than three hours of non-stop hot kiln work to produce, after days of planning and preparation. Ron says they called the exhibition “The Glass Age. The Five Elements” because the artists each had such different personalities that they represented the ele- ments of Water, Earth, Air and Fire. (No surprise to those who know and love him; Ron’s the fi ery one.) The Fifth Element is the medium that brought them together: the Glass. Duta Fine Arts Foundation, Jakarta. June 19-July 18. HE SAID WHAT?
It’s not a simple thing to capture and interpret the essence of a speech to another language, as the conversation takes place. At a recent aid sector meeting in Bali, Ubudian Helvi (Estee) Lystiani took on that role for one

SOUP COOK AND WATER SKI COACH
Gotta love being an adopted “aunt”. I get to read children’s books, cook chicken vegetable soup in a big pot (I love to cook for six, not just me), and teach the occasional “water skiing class”. The last is a complex exercise, involving me walking around very quickly, backwards, in the shallow end of a swimming pool, with a small child standing on my knees and holding onto my hands, as shout, “Let the boat pull you up!” and other core techniques for this important sporting skill. (Should the child ever get behind a real ski boat, this initial coaching will make a world of difference.) The rewards for me are huge; some of the best hugs in Bali, invitations to join in at the Kids’ Karaoke Session at Flava Lounge (Fri 7-9pm) and an occasional leaping, running child shouting, “Yay, Jen’s here, Jen’s here!” It’s the soup.
CHOOSING MANGGIS
I know how to pick a perfect peach or pear .. but I’ve never had much luck with the delicious tropical manggis (mangosteen). Sometimes each little segment is perfectly formed, white and delicious, others open to an unappealing mess, brown and bitter. The key to selection is colour. When you see a manggis with beautiful purple skin, DON’T CHOOSE IT. That one is still not properly formed. If the skin is matt and dull maroon, snatch it up, hold between the two heels of your palms and squeeze together to open. Aaaah. Delicious.
savvy overseas program director. Earlier this year we heard Estee at International Women’s Day, where she and fellow volunteer Alex Ryan (Australian accredited interpreter) helped everyone get the most of some inspiring speeches. At one moving moment, Estee captured both mood and rhythm of an American poem, as she translated it aloud into Indonesian, while reading it for the fi rst time! Many important business, government and even private meetings miss that opportunity for clarifi cation and connection. Email:

TEACH A KID TO FISH
Earlier this year, Ubud Rotary’s Bill and Judith Schneider came to the rescue for 150 children and teenagers at a Klung Kung orphanage, where it’s always been a battle to pay for food, let alone uniforms and tuition for the local school. They suggested building a fi sh farm, and it is already making a big difference to the children’s wellbeing. Next step, a Rotary project group will help senior students run the fi sh farm as a business. Divided into three competing groups, they receive training on how to feed/farm the fi sh and take care of the ponds, monitoring the funds they spend. At the end of the harvest in July, the students will each receive one fi sh and the rest will be sold off at the market. The team with the most profi t wins! To make the project sustainable they are need donations to increase the number of ponds (3.9 million rp/ pond, providing one fi sh/ child/ harvest).
