By having a nice garden you can create a general sense of well being in your life. As humans we are part of nature and by surrounding ourselves with aspects of the natural environment we can create a sense of comfort within our own lives by giving us a connection to our origins. These days, huge populations are jammed into urban areas and the natural part of our being is lost. Most of us would be familiar with the term ‘concrete jungle’ referring to the environment that we live in now. If you wish to re-connect and live with the cleansing benefi ts that nature can give, it doesn’t mean that you must abandon the city and head for the hills. I will give you some general advice on some simple ways that you can enhance your living conditions under the guise of Feng Shui. Some of the instructions once you know them will appear to be quite logical and blindingly obvious really.

Feng Shui in your garden will help attract nourishing energy to your home and life. In a way, it is very easy to tell if a garden has good Feng Shui. How do you feel in the garden? Do you like spending time there? Positive energy will always feel good, whether we are talking about your garden or home. A garden should have living spaces that provide a refuge for friends and family to relax and enjoy the sunshine or cool breeze, it’s very simple logic.

First step is to move all rubbish and clutter from each room of the house and areas of your garden as this leads to blockages of energy fl ow. Home and garden is often and outward refl ection of your own inner being. It always feels good to clear out the clutter. Ever heard the phrase, ‘cleaning is cleansing for the soul’ well it’s true. Keep your lawn trimmed, and the borders clean of debris and dead foliage. Pay attention to your front entrance, make sure it is unobstructed. Do not let plants overgrow to an extent that they block the ability of natural light to enter your home. Always prune plants that have become overgrown, woody or generally stale. Plants always look and feel better after a trim just as you yourself feel refreshed after having a much needed haircut. Rubbish bins should be out of sight if possible and do not have seating near them.

Provide good lighting at the front entrance to your house and garden. This is a place you must often frequent, and if it is bright and clear and uncluttered this will have positive effects on your own well being. A wind chime can be a very nice way to add the sound of nature within your house. Chimes can be used for protection, purifi cation or to enhance energy. Placed in front of an entrance, they make an effective security system by alerting occupants of intruders, and as a warning that their presence will be noticed. Wind chimes are also pleasing to both the eye and the ear. Sound is one of the most powerful and popular Feng Shui cures. Mirrors can also be used to enhance your garden and living space. If your front entrance is dull, brighten it up by using a mirror to refl ect the garden and light. Inside the house you can place a mirror on a wall opposite a view of nature, to bring the image into your living area.

Feng Shui for the Garden

Ponds and water features can bring good energy into a garden as long as it is moving, and not stagnant. Water is associated with wealth and is an excellent conductor of positive energy. Having a pond or water feature near the front entrance is advisable. It is always nice to come home to hear the soothing sound of fl owing water, especially after being caught in chaotic noisy traffi c. Just by looking at the water feature you will feel an inner sense of calm. I know myself from personal experience that it is also much easier to have a restful sleep to the gentle background sound of a water feature. If you already have a pond or water feature make sure it is always kept clean. The direction of the water fl ow should never fl ow away from you home. A water feature that has an even fl ow of water over all sides is fi ne. A simple ready-made water feature used (available at Carrefour for under Rp 100000). Better to keep it simple and easy to maintain, rather than a huge pond that may prove too time consuming for today’s busy person.

Feng Shui gardening is also possible if you live in an apartment. Placing plants on the balcony or at the doorway attracts positive energy. Keep potted plants in the different rooms of your apartment. Within the apartment provide a small water feature arranged with pebbles, and plants around it. Use a wind chime by your window to attract positive energy and feelings of well being. Follow these simple ideas to create a small garden in your apartment and you will be amazed at the improvement that it will bring about in the quality of your outlook on life.

When adjusting your garden to these concepts remember that less is more. The idea is to bring space and light to your garden, so there is no need to place water features and wind chimes everywhere as this would just end up causing more clutter. The common theme is that, you should use your garden as a sanctuary you will be amazed at how much better you will feel after sitting in the sun in a balanced garden space. Don’t feel overwhelmed, work progressively step by step. There are many schools of Feng Shui and the topic can become quite complicated, so my advice is to try and keep it simple and use some of these tips to see what makes you feel good. Whether or not you believe Feng Shui is nonsense there are few gardens that will not benefi t from its application, both practically and aesthetically.
