Hot Air On Its Way
The fourth MRA Bali International Triathlon takes place June 20. The race is set in stunning settings, starting in the waters of Jimbaran Bay, then a circuit to Nusa Dua and back followed by a run through Jimbaran village. The start and fi nish of the event is the Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay. In addition to the Olympic distance race, which consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 40 kilometer bike ride and fi nishing with a 10 kilometer run, this year’s event sees the introduction of a Sprint division. The new division will follow a course of a 500 meter swim, a 20 kilometer cycle and a 5 kilometer run and offers an option to those who might not be physically prepared for the Olympic distance race. The event will continue to offer the very popular 5km fun run and the team relay event. Click on

Title Fight Relocated to Jakarta
The World Boxing Association featherweight title fight betweens Indonesia’s featherweight champion Chris John and contender Fernando David Saucedo of Argentina will take place in Jakarta, instead of Bali. No reason was given for the move, with promoter Zaenal Thayeb saying that he will remain as the fi ght promoter but organization of the event will be conducted by another organization. The fi ght was originally scheduled for May 22 in Denpasar but was delayed after John suffered an injury during training. It will now take place in the capital towards the end of July, despite John’s preference to fi ght in June. RCTI, who has the broadcast rights for the fi ght, asked for the bout to be delayed until after their World Cup programming would end in mid-July.
In other fi ght news, Mira boxing camp was the location for Bali’s latest foray into Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fi ghting, the ‘Bali Brawl’ event. Taking place in a full metal cage, reported as Indonesia’s only one, a large crowd turned out to see a number of bouts take place between a number of local and foreign fi ghters.
Flames Burning Bright
The Bali Flames Netball Club recently hosted a team from Sydney for a friendly netball match. The more experienced Sydney team, which included regional representatives, took the lead within a minute of the fi rst buzzer and never looked back. Despite the gap on the scoreboard, the Flames never stopped trying, and in fact outscored their opponents in the last quarter. The game was played in a friendly spirit and as mentioned during the presentations, netball was the winner on the day!
It is the second game the team has played against visiting teams in the past month, with teams from Singapore and Australia playing in Bali at the end of April. The Flames were also scheduled to play in an international tournament in Bangkok this month, however the tournament has been postponed until later this year due to the civil unrest in the Thai capital. The Rip Curl School of Surf has set the date for Indonesia’s only kitesurfi ng event. The fi fth annual Bali Hot Air Kiteboarding competition will be held in Sanur on 2-4 July. The event will feature freestyle, marathon, and hang time events. Organisers are expecting this year’s action to be even bigger than 2009’s very successful event, where almost 30 competitors from nine different countries competed for a total of around US$10,000 in cash and prizes. Rumble In Da Jungle
33 year old Pepen Hendrik took out the 7th annual Rusty Rumble In Da Jungle, the 6-star Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfi ng Championship (ISC) Tour event, electrifying spectators in classic waves at Rangkan Beach in East Bali. He blitzed his opponent Dedi Santoso in the 30 minute fi nal with an incredible display of committed and aggressive surfi ng in perfect 5-6 foot waves.
Hendrik not only claimed the contest win and its paycheck of Rp 12. 5 million, but also nabbed the Coca-Cola Best Wave Award (Rp 1 million), and the Sabre Best Barrel Award (Rp 2 million), netting him a combined payday of Rp 15.5 million (USD 1,700) for the event. In addition, Hendrik has the distinction of gaining the highest combined wave score of the event (17.5), as well as highest single wave score of the event, a near perfect 9.5 out of a possible 10, all in the fi nal 30 minute heat. Hendrik now sits atop the 2010 Men’s Pro Division rankings after two tour events. The event also featured a Masters (over age 35) Division, with a total of 10 veteran surfers signing up to take on the pounding reef break. Sanur’s Wayan Budayasa won the division. A unique feature of this event was its incorporation of online technology, with video footage and live scoring being posted live on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour website. ISC organisers hope that having events streamed online will increase the exposure of the championship. The next event on the ISC schedule is the Reef Bali Pro, which will take place at Padma on Kuta beach June 21-26.
