In the course of events, one sees and hears many efforts to communicate with and control the actions of the four- legged partner in an effort to achieve the coveted goal of “controlled” movement of stock over a specified course.
There are a few specific commands that all herding dogs should recognize and, hopefully, respond to in an effi- cient and prompt manner. Among them are: Down, Sit, or Stand/Stop: the dog must cease forward motion and remain in the commanded position
until given further orders. At one time (especially with Border Collie type dogs) all stops were automatically downs, but with the entrance of so many upright breeds, the preferences have been the stop-in-a-stand or sit. However, all dogs should have a down to be used when necessary to the situation.
Get Out/Back: The dog must move away from the stock. Walk Up: The dog must move directly toward the stock.
That’ll Do: Dog must stop working the stock and return to the handler. Come bye: The dog must move clockwise around the stock. Away to me: Dog must move counter-clockwise around the stock. Out or Get Out: The dog should turn away from the stock and put some distance between himself and the
stock until given another command. Here: Informal recall used to get the dog to come to you close enough to touch. With Me: A slightly more formal recall that brings the dog into the handler’s side. Patting the leg gets the
