by people who started out with the sheep herding and herding dog competitions that use primarily sheep, goats, and ducks and later transferred their interest or expanded their involvement to include cattle working.

So, for whatever reasons, we find that the vast vocabulary contributions for this particular aspect of working with dogs come from sheepherding background with some adaptations being introduced as needed along the way.

With the advent of the AKC herding program in 1990, large numbers of different breeds with a diversity of herding abilities and skills have emerged. With these breeds came herding exhibitors. Where once the field was dominated by long term, dedicated men (generally) and dogs (Border Collies mainly) a new group of ex- hibitor/handlers entered the scene.

Originally herding trials were developed to showcase skills developed over years in the fields, yards, and other daily working areas. Many of the new exhibitors are not working stock in any utilitarian manner, but are only involved to let the dog participate in an activity that gives great pleasure to both the dog and exhibitor. As a side effect, the exhibitors get the thrill of actually doing something constructive with their dogs.
