We’ve all been captivated by the woman who fully expresses her feminine essence. I’m not talking about the runway model or pulled together socialite. The ultimate female is a radiantly pregnant mother lovingly creating a new life. She’s an enthusiast who dances with abandon. She’s a woman living so authentically that she inspires you to do the same.

Most likely she is one who finds and nurtures pleasure in the great little moments of life. I like Dr.

Christiane Northrup’s observation that when we invite pleasure into our own lives, our happiness blesses and benefits everyone around us. When I saw Northrup’s latest book, The Secret Pleasures of Menopause, I called her for some “girl talk” to discuss why she says that life after 50 can be the most pleasurable time of all. She confirmed what other great teachers are say- ing—that life is meant to be joyous! We are pleasure-seeking creatures by nature and the consequent joy makes us younger, smarter, more intuitive and healthier. Ellen Mahoney distilled our conversation for this month’s Wise Words on page 38. Catherine Guthrie expands on this theme in “Reclaim Vitality!” on page 22. “People with vitality overflow with that special something; they stand out from the rest like shiny pennies,” she writes. We discover that in any culture, East or West, the way to shine is to stay connected with what nourishes us inside and out. So, what is sapping your vitality and draining your life energy? Locally, editor Linda Sechrist explores four approaches offered by women whose work involves helping us counter the fatiguing stressors associated with today’s Herculean de- mands, so that we are ready to rev up our joie de vivre (page 30). Another challenge to our well-being may be our relationship with money. This month, Lisa Marshall introduces 10 steps to fearless financial independence in “A Woman’s Guide to Financial Health,” on page 34. Listening to our intui- tive wisdom is key, along with examining those things that are truly worth the life energy that we give to them.

As a result of my decision to invest in my own joie de vivre, my daughter, Alina, and I will be making the most of the warm, sensuous Hawaiian island of Maui this month. We are gifting ourselves with a long-cherished dream of special time spent together nurturing our mother-daughter bond, while ratcheting up our pleasure meter.

This annual Women’s Wellness issue is intended to support you and all the women in your life in making such healthful, life-affirming choices, from the minute to the grand. It’s also a time to acknowledge all those along the way whose essence has contributed to making us who we are.

I personally recognize the Queen Bee of our family, my 87-year-old mother (Happy Mother’s Day), as well as my daughter, four sisters, many nieces and girl- friends, who make life beauteous in more ways than they can imagine. I invite you to take time this month to connect with some of the special women in your life.

Wishing you great pleasure and prosperity,

Sharon Bruckman, Publisher
