“Going green” means different things to all of us, because we each have different priorities, lifestyles and values. However, we all have one thing in common: planet Earth is our home, the place where our individual actions can make a collective impact and our shared thoughts can spark awareness.
Like many of the people I meet as a result of publishing Natural Awakenings, I have taken simple green steps and am looking for new sustainable opportunities daily. For example, home. Like many other Natural Awakenings publishers and editors, I don’t waste time on dressing up and driving to work. As a “pajama - ing unnecessary travel, consolidating distribu- tion efforts with one company, reducing my
printing needs by more than 50 percent, using recyclable paper and optimizing my working hours. The time I save is invested in my family and friends, as well as myself. The result: I feel increased enthusiasm and renewed energy, especially from trying out many of the natural products, like the electromagnetic mat and aloe vera from USAloe, that have been introduced to me by our advertisers.
My new green yardstick measures progress, rather than perfection, and the phrase on part of my comfortable new business attire, a 100 percent bamboo shirt im- reminds me why I publish this magazine.
As a sports and water advocate, it’s fun knowing that I’m reducing my carbon imprint whenever I stand up on my lightweight custom paddleboard, designed by Jason Hendricks. It’s a great way for anyone, of any age, to enjoy our harbors, la- goons and ocean without engine noise and pollution. Take part in Amy Hendricks’ paddling and yoga instructions, like I did, and learn how to go faster… but not faster than her!
We are fortunate to live in an area where “going green” is a welcomed way of life—one that appears to be moving towards becoming the norm. This is most evident in the way Ubuntu Hair Studio is making a difference locally and globally. Thanks to our community partners, like James French of Coast Home Building Ser- vices and Kent Horner, of C&H Gardens Artistic Landscape & Tree Service, we are empowering change by building awareness, encouraging and educating. Earth Day is every day!
Many smiles, Elaine
