Invest Well

by Eating Locally

by Yvette Lyn

Investing in community-supported agriculture groups, farmers’ markets and local credit unions is in alignment with the principles of Slow  described by author Woody Tasch in his book,

Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money. The

Ocean Beach People’s Organic Foods Market, a California cooperative, and the San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project are doing their part to help develop and strength- en Tasch’s “nurture capital” market, which seeks to connect investors with their local economies and build capital markets around preservation and restoration, rather than extraction and consumption.

San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project

“If you eat food and live in San Diego County, then you are an interdepen- dent part of the food system and connected with every other part,” advises the San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project. A network of citizens, farmers, chefs, gardeners, teachers and students who work to strengthen the local food movement in the San Diego region, the organization enthu- siastically promotes small family farms and local food businesses. Ocean Beach People’s Organic Foods Market

For the Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Market, which began in 1971 as a small neighborhood collec- tive buying club, the dream of a community-owned vegetarian co-op store became a reality in 2002. The 12,900-square-foot model of eco-conscious con- struction, located at 4765 Voltaire Street, in San Diego, is powered by solar energy and proudly boasts approximately $12 million in annual sales. The co-op, which participates in the National

Cooperative Grocers Association of 140 co-ops, fosters relationships with its 250 local growers. Equity investment for members is $15 per share, and no one gets to buy more than one share of stock. The store offers an extensive selection of organic produce, groceries, dairy and bulk foods and herbs, as well as vitamins and homeopathics, cruelty-free bodycare and aromatherapy products.
