CRAZY…

by Lorrie Baird

We’ve been homeowners

again for one week and already I’m crazy. I know this because people who are sane are not ecstati- cally happy to be clean- ing toilets after strang- ers have used them. Our house had been rented right up to a few hours before we closed. I don’t know anything about the renters except that the woman had short black hair which she shed all over my new house. Any sane person would be ticked off to have to do all this cleaning and not see one red cent from the rental. Instead, you’d think I was vacationing at the Ritz. Jim is equally smitten.

He spent all week swoon- ing over his man cave a/k/a garage. First, he built a work bench. A visiting friend from NH gave him a hand and Jim and Ken knocked out the bench in one afternoon. Jim has never had an oversized two-car garage in all our married life. Yesterday I came in from the kitchen to find him sitting in the middle of the now neatly arranged garage looking around with a silly satisfied grin on his face. As for the ga-

rage’s utility sink, both of us think utility sinks are a gift from God. We bought the house

fully furnished, right down to the pots and pans. This is a good thing because almost all we own in the world is in our RV. It’s a treasure hunt every time we open a cupboard. The owners had one locked mystery closet in the house inaccessible to the renters. We couldn’t wait to open it. Inside were brand new luxury pillows, lots of handy household repair stuff and fix-up gadgets. We both did high fives and a hip-bumping happy dance. I spent the entire week

making friends with our new appliances. It’s been a long time since I used a regular size washer and dryer and we’ve never had the luxury of a garbage disposal; I still jump every time it goes on. And we’ve inherited a whole bunch of outside flora and fauna we have no clue what to do with. We donated most of the

living room furniture to Habitat and invested in two new pieces of on-sale furniture. But when they delivered the leather sec- tional sofa it seemed really big for the room. We had 3 days to change our mind. When I walked into the liv- ing room the next day Jim was talking to the sofa, so

right away I knew that all this change was making him crazy too. Rolling his eyes heavenward he threw himself on the couch and said, “Please don’t let her take this couch away from me.” The sectional stayed. There was never

giving it at least an ad- miring glance. Our auntie donated my late uncle’s leather recliner to the cause and with only 3 new pieces the house already feels like ours. Our days have been spent working as if we

any doubt about the free- standing kitchen island we bought. It not only modernized the kitchen but more than doubled my counter space. It’s still hard to pass by it without

were still volunteering for Habitat. Meals have been enjoyed on the lanai. We don’t have a TV yet so the only sounds come from nature; a plethora of song birds, sand hill cranes, a

lovesick young cardinal advertising his availability to all the single females. So here we sit, fully content and counting our bless- ings, thoroughly happy even though we joke that a sparrow could babysit our shrunken nest egg. Easter Sunday with the southern side of our fam- ily gathered around our dining room table we both felt so very blessed to have the best of both worlds; summers in beautiful New Hampshire with our grandkids and wonderful friends; winters in sunny Florida with our beloved aunt and cousins. Now that we have our

new house clean and spar- kling, it’s time to pull up anchor and head north.
