cessed in a laboratory, where they are artificially inserted with foreign genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. The genes can come from bacteria, vi- ruses, insects, animals and even humans. GMOs are not safe, but have been in the food supply since the mid-nineties. Certified organic growers are not al- lowed to have GMOs in their seeds. GMOs will cause the loss of our heritage seeds. Since the 1900’s, 75% are lost. Are you familiar with Irra-

diation? Organic standards prohibit the use of ionizing radiation to preserve food. US government regulations allow irradiation (labeled “cold pasteurization”) of both produce and meat. Proponents argue that irra- diation extends shelf life by killing microbes that spoil food and cause illness. Opponents argue that it also breaks down enzymes and vitamins that make the food healthy in the first place. They suggest clean- ing up industrial feedlots and food processing op- erations as a better way to protect the public from E. Coli and other pathogens. Heirloom seeds are not a hybrid, nor modified with

GMOs, they are open-pol- linated, able to reproduce true to variety, under natural condition, with their own original genetic material and reproductive immune infor- mation. What is a hybridized plant? It is a cross between two varieties of a plant, and if seeds are taken from such cross-pollination, they can- not reproduce the parent plant, reverting back to one of the parent’s genetics. Or- ganic growers also raise and preserve heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables that cannot be grown on factory farms. For soil building, add- ing organic fertilizers and

Organic soil amendments and con- ditioners can renew the life of your soil without adding unwanted chemicals. The basic providers of nutrients in the soil are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassi- um. Trace minerals provide the rest. Unhealthy plants are nutrient depleted. Do not make the mistake of using chemical fertilizers that will add unwanted ni- trates or salts to the soil. Organic standards rely

on the use of composted manure, crop residues, green manures, cover crops, crop rotations, com- panion planting and natu- ral mineral supplements to provide needed nutri-

reality is that it is just another euphe- mism for bias. For generations, white Southern judges had all kinds of empa- thy for other white Southerners, which is to say, bias against blacks. The question is whether you want

equal treatment or you want payback. Cycles of revenge and counter-revenge have been at the heart of racial and eth- nic strife throughout history, in coun- tries around the world. It is a history written in blood. It is history we don’t need to repeat in the United States of America. Political demagoguery and political favoritism have turned groups violently against each other, even in countries where they have lived peacefully side by side for generations. Ceylon was one of those countries in the first half of the 20th century, before the politics of group favoritism so polarized the country-- now called Sri Lanka-- that it produced a decades-long civil war with mass slaughters and unspeakable atrocities.

to build sustainable soil? Renew the soil with your own compost and plant crops with organic seed. You will then have created a sustainable method of growing your own food. Soil building begins after the initial soil testing and the addition of organic fertilizers and condition- ers, and continues by or- ganically maintaining and improving the soil over time. Once your garden is established it can be sus- tained by using garden soil to inoculate your compost. It will feed your soil, and you will then have a cycle of renewable soil.

Dear Friends: Anticipation is part of

gardening. When the soil is appropriately tilled, soil tested, soil amended, organic seeds in hand, I stand somewhat in awe. I will then inoculate the seed and water to the earth. This space prepared for me since time began. While the seeds embed themselves in the soil, you wait for its first sign of birthing little sprouts. Looking here and there, a greening of life - it marvels me every time! I always wonder, how can

seeds planted in the same soil, each have distinctive flavors? It is not in the soil, but the flavor is encapsu- lated in the seed…and who put the flavor in the womb of the seed? We both know the answer.

The world has been shocked by the

mass slaughters of the Tutsis by the Hutus in Rwanda but, half a century ago, there had been no such systematic slaughters there. Political demagoguery whipped up ethnic polarization, among people who had co-existed, who spoke the same language and had even inter- married. We know-- or should know-- what lies

at the end of the road of racial polariza- tion. A “race card” is not something to play, because race is a very dangerous political plaything.
