Budhsing Gurung first entered the service on 21 December 1904. He was commissioned as Jemadar on 15 February 1917, becoming
Subadar on 20 December 1919, and Subadar-Major of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force) on 1 January 1926. He served
during the War of 1914-21, in Egypt from 4 December 1914 to 2 June 1915 and 20 December 1915 to 23 February 1916; and in
Gallipoli from 3 June to 19 December 1915 (Wounded, I.D.S.M.). He subsequently served in Waziristan 1922-23 (Despatches London
Gazette 30 May 1924).

I.D.S.M. Gazette of India 29 May 1937: ‘For services rendered during the
Waziristan operations in April 1937.’ The 2-2nd Punjab Regiment attacked high
ground on the south bank of the Khaisora River, and this was taken without loss.
But as the battalion withdrew and descended it was attacked by some three to
four thousand tribesmen. Several men were wounded and a counter-attack was
organised to rescue them. The regimental history records: ‘...the I.D.S.M. was
awarded to Lance-Naik Munshi Ram for carrying back a badly wounded man
unaided and under heavy fire.’
B.E.M. London Gazette 25 September 1947: ‘For gallant and distinguished
services whilst Prisoners of War in the Far East.’
The recommendation states: ‘10135 Havildar Munshi Ram, I.D.S.M., 5th Battalion, 2nd Punjab Regiment. His outstanding conduct as
P.O.W. in Japanese hands was his steadfast loyalty at a time when the majority of his class (Dogras) had gone over to the I.N.A. Despite
moral and physical coercion by members of his caste in the I.N.A., especially one Subedar Sant Ram, a prominent member of that
Movement who threatened him with death and caused heavy punishment to be inflicted upon him, he not only remained loyal but
aggressively resisted the Movement. His example influenced the few Dogras in his own Battalion, and in other units, in remaining loyal
and maintaining their morale and discipline. Musselmans would acclaim an award for his loyal services.’
Munshi Ram was a Dogra Rajput from the village of Rakkar, Dera Gopi Pur, in Kangra district.

A rare Burma Gallantry Medal group of four awarded to Ambulance-Sepoy Saw Tha Nyunt, 77 Field Ambulance,
Burma Hospital Corps
BURMA GALLANTRY MEDAL, G.VI.R. (1356 Amb.-Sepoy Saw Tha Nyunt, Burma Hospital Corps.); 1939-45 STAR; BURMA STAR,
WAR MEDAL, these last three unnamed as issued, very fine (4) £3000-3500
B.G.M. London Gazette 22 March 1945.
The recommendation states: ‘On 25th June 1944 at about 1100 hours, No. 1406 Amb/Sepoy Saw Shwe Tha Tay, B.H.C., and three
others of the same unit were pulling a boat loaded with unit stores and equipment up one of the major rapids on the Dhaleswari river at
Darayal Chara. They were on the left rocky bank of the river and below them was a 50 feet drop. The force of the rapid was so strong
that these men were dragged off their foot-holds. As the result, Saw Shwe Tha Tay fell headlong into the rapids and was swept
unconscious into a deep whirl-pool nearby.
No. 1356 Amb/Sepoy Saw Tha Nyunt, B.H.C., with complete disregard to personal danger, immediately plunged into the whirl-pool
and saved his comrade from drowning.’
Saw Tha Nyunt was originally recommended for an Albert Medal but was awarded the Burma Gallantry Medal ‘as action took place in
forward area in proximity [of the] enemy’.
