John Haverfield was born in Walton, Glastonbury on 27 November 1832. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for service in the
Royal Marines at Glastonbury on 27 January 1850, aged 19 years, 2 months. He saw active service in the Second China War with the
Royal Marine Battalion, and was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. Medal with gratuity in 1873. Sold with a quantity of copied
service papers and research.

Saunders Barton Haliday was born on 6 October 1843. He qualified as a M.R.C.S. 1863, L.R.C.P. Ed. 1866. Appointed an Assistant
Surgeon 1 April 1867; Surgeon, July 1873; Surgeon Major, April 1879, and Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1891. Lieutenant-
Colonel Haliday retired on 23 June 1897 and died at Anerley, Kent on 10 January 1901.

Henry George Luther Wortabet was born in Syria on 5 November 1858. He qualified as a M.B. C.M. 1878; M.D. 1883, Edinburgh.
Serving with the Indian Medical Department, he was appointed Surgeon in March 1879; Surgeon Major in March 1891, and
Lieutenant-Colonel in March 1899. Lieutenant-Colonel Wortabet retired on 22 June 1909. With associated copied papers.

John Mark Anthony Retallick was born on 13 November 1857. Commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant in the 25th Foot in September 1875, he
was appointed a Lieutenant in the Bengal Staff Corps in November 1879. He served in the Afghan Campaign 1878-80, firstly with the
25th Foot in the operations in the Bazar Valley, and then with the 45th Bengal Native Infantry in the actions with the Ghilzais at and
near Jagdalakand and in the action at Chihildakhteran. For his services he was mentioned in despatches. Retallick was promoted to
Captain in September 1886; Major in September 1895; Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1897 and was confirmed in that rank
in September 1901. With the 45th Bengal N.I. he served in the Zhob Valley Expedition, 1884. He was attached to the Hong Kong
Regiment in 1891 and was appointed Commandant with the rank of Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1897. As such he
served in the China Campaign of 1900 and was mentioned in the despatches of Lieutenant-General Sir Alfred Gaselee, K.C.B., as
having done ‘useful work on the Paotingfu Expedition’ (London Gazette 14 May 1901). Lieutenant-Colonel Retallick retired from the
Hong Kong Regiment and the Indian Army in 1904. With copied gazette extracts and other research.

Charles Henry Vincent Garbett was born on 19 March 1849. He was gazetted a Cornet in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers in 1869 joining
the regiment in India. Promoted to Lieutenant in October 1871, he was appointed to the Bengal Staff Corps in October 1873, serving
firstly with the 3rd Bengal Cavalry and later with the 2nd Bengal Cavalry. With the former he served in the Afghan Campaign and was
mentioned in the despatches of 1 January 1880. Garbett was advanced to Captain in November 1881 and Major in November 1889.
Appointed second-in-command of the 2nd Bengal Lancers in 1892, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1895 and
appointed Commandant of the 2nd Bengal Lancers in July 1897. He vacated that command in March 1901 and in July was promoted
to Colonel. During 1902-03 he commanded the Lahore District and was placed on the Unemployed List in 1906. With copied

Salvo Pace was born in Cospiqua, Malta, on 1 September 1860. A Musician by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 17
October 1878, serving as a Domestic 2nd Class aboard the Black Prince. In March 1880 he was rated as a Bandsman when on
Euryalus, after which he served on Temeraire, March 1882-April 1884, seeing service at Alexandria, 11 July 1882. He was advanced to
Band Corporal in January 1899 when on Revenge, and to Bandmaster in December 1902 when on Ramillies. Pace was pensioned
ashore at Malta after service on the Montagu in September 1903 but re-entered the Royal Navy to complete time for a pension, ranked
as a Bandsman on the Bulwark, December 1903-September 1904. With copied service paper.
