on 7 october 2009, the northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce held a business
breakfast with Philip Shaw, chief economist of Investec. The purpose of the visit was to
enable Mr Shaw to speak on the global economy with business leaders and, in turn, to
hear from them their experience of current business conditions. With mixed signs of
emergence from the global recession, those in attendance were interested to hear
Phillip’s assessment of these signs, their impact on those markets and the implications
for interest rates, currencies and trade.
