Years of unfortunate conflict have haunted the cluster of East African countries that comprise Abyssinia, but you’d never
y
know it when tasting the blissful-yet-exotic cuisine that is so profoundly embedded into the area’s proud traditions. Since
the decline of tensions between Etritrea and Ethiopia almost a decade ago, this branch of cuisine has found a new home on
California’s list of favorite exotic fare. The finest local exemplar of this is Muzita Bistro. Owner Abel Woldemichael considers
it a labor of love to make sure Muzita Bistro is a place where guests feel like family. The restaurant’s name is in honor of Abel’s
older sister who spoke six languages and loved to cook for company. Pairing the setup of a cozy home with the subtle
touches of a stylish high-end eatery, the dining area at Muzita exuded hospitality even before we were greeted warmly by
the staff. Our enthusiastic server, Sabina, took the time to go over each selection with us in amazing detail. Her uncommon
expertise not only brought a solid combination of colors and flavors to our table, it also turned the evening into a fascinat-
ing lesson in Tigrinya—one of the languages spoken in Eritrea.
