Robeks Fruit Smoothies & Healthy Eats:
A Change For Fast Food
S
tarbucks seems to exist on the corner of every commercial district. Best friends and business partners Kevin Lamb and Rick My-
ers had no desire to join the caffeine empire, they wanted to provide an alternative. Robeks Fruit Smoothies & Healthy Eats of
California got its fresh start in 1996. Since then, the chain has expanded across the country, including 7 locations in Connecticut.
Lamb and Myers realized the potential of the Robeks franchise and opened their first store in West Hartford Center last Novem-
ber. "I just liked the concept in general," Myers said. "It's very unique and under-served in the market." The long list of smoothies
ranges from a variety of mixed berry and supplement-infused smoothies to others that offer exotic flavors like acai or pomegranate
juice, both popular antioxidants. Smoothie prices range from $3.75 to $6.95, depending on size and mixture.
"We only use natural ingredients, no artificial sweeteners," Lamb said. "And all smoothies are offered with a free nutritional
boost. Nutritional supplements are an important ingredient for Robeks, which has its own proprietary brands. Vitabek, is a multi-
vitamin supplement, and Immunibek, is an immunity booster.
In addition to smoothies, Robeks offers shakes, tart frozen yogurt, energy bowls with fresh acai, banana slices and granola,
wheatgrass, high protein muffins and vegan cookies. "The wheat grass is very popular," Myers said. "One ounce gives the same
nutrition as two and a half pounds of leafy green veggies. " Wheatgrass has received a bad reputation for its taste, Myers said but
the majority of his customers change their mind once they try it.
Robeks also differentiates itself through customer service, employees deal customers with on a first-name basis. Lamb and My-
ers also strive to personally greet customers whenever they are on the premises. "We know many of our customers on a first-name
basis," said shift leader Maia Hunter, "Many come 3-5 times a week, so we get to know them pretty well”.
West Hartford is the first Hartford area location for Robeks, Myers said the company would like to open others. “For now, we
are focused on maintaining quality food and service.” "It's been busy but great," Lamb said. "We've been open for five months,
and we've been able to see a steady growth. I think it was a nice surprise in the community."
