about the situation and wrote: “I can only pray that he finds a home
who will be willing to give him the treatment needed… I can not see
why you would expect me to carry this burden.”

Let me digress here. The first week of December was a nightmare for
me. I had to have my new well pump pulled out of the ground and re-
paired, I found out on December 3
rd
that my job was ending on Decem-
ber 31
st
, my dog Bandit injured his eye, my truck died, and I was just
trying to get through the week. Then at the end of the day on Friday,
December 5
th
, the impound contacted me to tell me that the breeder
had not shown up to pick up Maverick. What??? After keeping him an
extra two weeks so the breeder could retrieve him, they were begging
me to find a place for him to go. So, I have to say that I CAN see why I
would expect the breeder to carry “the burden” of this dog. Why
should I be any more responsible for him than the people who brought
him into this world? I know that times are hard all over. But someone
who charges a four-figure stud fee, probably sells her dogs for four-
figure prices, and has wealthy friends ought to be able to come up
with some cash. I acknowledged that the heartworm diagnosis made
the situation more problematic, and asked if the breeder was willing to
help with things that don’t cost anything, like requesting funding to
help cover the vet bills, helping find a home for the dog, etc. Then I re-
ceived the response “we are not even sure he is our dog”. Oh really?
All those previous explanations of how all the details of the litter and
the former owner fit this dog seemed to indicate otherwise. And in the
same e-mail message “there is no way to find the former owner...He
has moved...no phone number listed”. Would you really want to return
him to people who didn’t neuter or microchip him, left him running
loose with no ID, and didn’t re-claim him?

Then the communication degenerated to statements like: “I am so
sorry this is a bad situation...however it is not my fault......I can only do
so much... there is a point when it becomes a load too heavy to carry…
and you just have to know when to fold… never under estimate the
power of prayer!”
