I was ecstatic that Maverick’s breeder had recognized him and was go-
ing to take care of him. The following day the breeder sent a more de-
tailed explanation of the dog’s background. She explained that they
usually remove the dewclaws, but this litter’s dewclaws were left intact
because the delivery was stressful. She said that they only tattoo their
puppies on the belly (and don’t implant microchips), but that the
ACD’s “hide” doesn’t hold the ink over the years. The new owners had
been encouraged to microchip the dog. The registration papers weren’t
issued because proof of neutering had not been supplied. The breeder
couldn’t locate the original owner. It didn’t sound like a great situation
to send the dog back to anyway.

The breeder said they were planning to be in the Twin Cities area on
December 5
th
, but they would come right away if the dog was in jeop-
ardy of losing his life. The impound was willing to care for Maverick
until December 5
th
and the breeder began making arrangements to
pick him up. She was thinking of re-homing Maverick with her adult
son, who sounded like he had the perfect home in the country.

On December 4

I learned that in the process of testing Maverick to get
a health certificate to go to Canada, the vet learned that he was heart-
worm positive. That’s when the whole plan began to unravel. Knowing
that Maverick had heartworm, the vet couldn’t issue a health certifi-
cate. Besides, treating Maverick in Canada would be much more ex-
pensive than treating him in the U.S. The breeder didn’t have much ex-
perience with heartworm, seemed to be uninformed about it, and did-
n’t want to take him on in that condition. She wrote, "We hope and
pray the ACDCA can help sponsor his treatment." She claimed that she
was not affiliated with the ACDCA because she lives in Canada, and she
apparently wasn’t willing to ask for help.

Then her e-mails began to include statements like, “Poor little guy--He
is in our prayers”. What happened to “We are always responsible for
our dogs…We will come and get him. We will find him a forever loving
home. That is our promise”??? She said that she was deeply upset
