the food drops out. But always reward your dog at the end of a track
with something they truly love.
The hardest thing with tracking is learning to handle the line and to
read your dog. When tracking, most trainers suggest you keep quiet
and let the dog do his job. Some dogs do better with a bit of verbal
praise until they are sure they know they are doing it right. NEVER
physically reprimand your dog when tracking and keep verbalizations
to a minimum as well. You don’t want to interfere with your dog.

Your job is to make sure that your line ever gets tangled up and never
jerks the dog. It is best to teach the dog to lean into the harness and
pull. This “pull” is part of what you will “read” when tracking. Maintain
a light tension on the line so that you can feel the dog. Practice
allowing the line to slip thru your hands and taking back any slack if
the dog turns back or circles. You can do this by hooking a line to
another person or animal and having them move about as you follow
them. When you can maintain a constant tension and keep the line
from tangling, you are ready to start with a dog.
