Client match Barbados Sue Howard,
Tropic Breeze, Plymouth Where would you bring your own family on holiday? I’d go all-inclusive as it’s not always cheap to eat out in the restaurants. I’ve got an 11 year-old and eight year-old and I’d bring them to Almond Beach Village or Crystal
Cove. The Village has a great kids’ club, and it’s so big. I would sell Almond Casuarina to couples, or those wanting to party in the Gap. At Crystal Cove they have some duplexes with a mezzanine level which is good for older kids.
And if you were coming as a couple? The House – no kids!
What did you think of the new Oceans Two? From the outside the appearances are deceiving – I was very impressed. Its $700 a night but the apartments can sleep up to six people, so it’s good value. There’s a beautiful roof-deck which opens soon.
Where would you recommend for an affordable spa? The Praana Spa at Almond Beach Club – it’s very nice, and affordable.
What would you sell for weddings? Probably Almond. For them to pay all the government fees and registrar fees in their free wedding package is very good – you’re normally looking at an extra £50-£60. And the Sugar Mill at The Village is quite different, for the ceremony.
What’s been the highlight of the trip for you? The evening at Harbour Lights was brilliant. If you could sit there and didn’t get up and dance you’d be mad. I’d recommend Harbour Lights to couples who want to party. Seeing the island on the Funfari tour was also excellent. I was a bit nervous about carnival – I thought I might feel a bit old but I really enjoyed it.
What are your impressions of Barbados? It feels very safe. I went to Kenya a few years ago and you didn’t feel safe, but here, walking along at night, nobody bothered you. I would have walked on my own. It’s definitely a party island – if you come here you’ve got to be prepared to party. And the locals are welcoming.
Almond Casuarina: very comfortable and clean
Kevin Sansom, Bath Travel What did you think of Almond Casuarina? I really warmed to this hotel. I had a standard room, very comfortable and clean, overlooking the pool. There was a cracking breakfast with unlimited choice.
Which self-catering hotels did you like best? Bougainvillea was one of my favourites. We had a warm welcome and the range of accommodation was very nice. Amaryllis Beach Resort was in a perfect position. It was good standard accommodation and it had access to a prime turtle-nesting beach. Coconut Court Hotel is a simple Bajan-style family-owned hotel. I liked the feel of it – basic but homely and good value for money.
What would you sell to families with kids? Probably Almond Beach Village. There was a bit more here, especially for children, with all the usual amenities of an Almond resort.
What were your trip highlights? Carnival was amazing. I enjoyed the catamaran day too, it was so relaxing, and amazing to swim up close with the turtles.
Tamarind Cove has just been refurbished
Which hotel would you most like to return to? Tamarind Cove was a fantastic hotel. Stunning position, fantastic rooms. This hotel has recently had a total refurbishment and this really shined through. The cocktails and canapes we were given hit the spot too!
The new Ocean Two resort is not all-inclusive
How did you enjoy flying Club? The service in British Airways’ Club World cabin was excellent. As soon as I was seated I was offered a glass of champagne. The flatbed seat was comfortable – and I definitely needed to catch up on some sleep! For catering I do think British Airways is among the finest.
