Jenny Ley-Meek “We too have come up with similar tricks for travellers who are only able to escape abroad in peak time...”

six-week summer break, the cost of holidays shoots through the roof.

W Simon Calder made the point in

his TTG column two weeks ago that holiday capacity simply cannot be switched on and off. But it doesn’t help travel agents that not only are customers with children looking for that elu- sive school holiday bargain but these days it’s the grandparents too. Yes, those retired folk who are free of work commitments – and who in theory should be able to travel at any time of the year – are now causing us the most grief. This is because they are the ones who look after the grandchildren during term time while mum and dad go to work, so they can only travel when the schools break up for the holidays too. Our agency niche is the adult-only market, so our clientele is a more mature crowd. This increase in term time childminding by grandparents could pose real problems. And means the moaning and groaning over holiday price hikes is getting worse. Simon’s advice included booking Friday and Sunday flights to avoid getting stung by the fare on a Saturday. We too have come up with similar tricks for travellers who are only able to escape abroad in peak time...

■ Forget the main holiday hub airports in southern Spain – fly clients into less

e all know that as soon as the final school bell goes, whether it is for Christmas, Easter, Whitsun or the traditional

popular destinations such as Barcelona rather than more expensive Reus or Gerona routes. ■ Suggest car hire as a way of “seeing more” and getting to the final destination. ■ Cost flights to Athens and ferry crossings to some of the more remote and less costly Greek islands rather than package deals to the more popular and often more costly Corfu or Crete. ■ Save huge amounts of money by looking at alternative departure airports in the UK.

Scottish airports are always massively cheaper in our six-week break as their school holidays are earlier.

■ If your bottom line permits, throw in a pre-travel night’s stay at an airport hotel in Glasgow or half-price train ticket to get them there.

Clients will be surprised just how much can be saved if they are willing to step out of their “comfort zone” in getting from A to B.
