NCL to build more ‘Freestyle’ ships

NCL’S TWO new ships will take the “best” of its latest vessel Epic, the line’s chief executive, Kevin Sheehan, has said. The new “Freestyle Cruising” ships will be

delivered in spring 2013 and spring 2014 in a £1 billion agreement with German shipyard Meyer Werft. The two new 143,500-ton super-ships will be the largest passenger ships ever built in Germany and will carry about 4,000 passengers. Sheehan said: “Building on the incredible suc- cess and popularity of Norwegian Epic, we are taking the best of what our newest ship has to offer, as well as drawing on our legacy of innova- tion in the cruise industry, in creating a new class of Freestyle Cruising vessel.

The new ships will be the eighth and ninth NCL

vessels to be built by Meyer Werft, which built NCL’s four Jewel-class ships.

Royal Caribbean has joined a growing list of cruise lines unveil- ing winter promotions to encour- age customers to book ahead for 2011 despite fears over govern- ment cuts and job losses. The company will launch the largest ever flight

give-away by a mainstream cruise line on Satur- day. Some 10,000 free flights are on offer, for selected 2011 Mediterranean sailings departing from Palma de Mallorca, Venice, Rome and Barcelona. Jo Rzymowska, associate vice-president and

general manager of Royal Caribbean Interna- tional, UK and Ireland, said she “wanted people to start thinking about their summer holidays, and the genuine savings that they can make if they book now”. P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Cunard un-

month until November. Gary Wardrope, owner of Get Cruising, said these types of pro- motions were needed to encour- age bookings from those worried by the economy.

“This kind of initiative is important from the cruise lines,” he said. “We have noticed fewer people booking for next year because of fears over government cuts and the fact that many managed to get last minute deals this year, so they don’t see the point in booking early. The cruise companies need to keep being proactive.” Royal Caribbean is also giving away Marks & Spencer vouchers worth £100 to agents who make a booking with the promotion. A name will be pulled out of the prize draw every day of the promotion, which runs from October 30 until December 20. Rzymowska added: “Around 90% of our busi- ness comes from agents, and we wanted to show our support for them.”

I was so lucky – I stayed in a Suite with personal Butler service, which was pure bliss! My Butler, Patrick, reserved sunbeds for a day of lazing by the pool, was on hand to bring ice cold cocktails throughout the day and what’s more he even organised dinner reservations for the evening; I never lifted a finger!
