When California dreams come true

Travel Counsellor Chris Roberts learned about California online before seeing it for himself

Agents who had completed California Tourism’s Online Travel Training course joined a recent fam to the state after win- ning places in a booking incentive. “The trip was amazing – there were four groups going out on different itineraries and it was one of the best organised I’ve ever been on,” says Gold Travel Counsellor Chris Roberts who joined a group heading along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. “Even though I’d done the training, have spent many years selling California and had high expectations, the friendliness of the people, the scenery and the food and wine on offer exceeded my expectations. I came away really wowed.”

Would you like to visit Darwin? Applications open on November 1 for Corroboree 2011, taking place in Darwin next June. Aussie Specialists from the UK and Ireland have until December 12 to apply, while those who are not yet qualified Aussie Specialists can complete the free online training programme, and are then welcome to register by the deadline. The Aussie Specialists Programme is a free online course designed specifically for the retail travel trade to help agents increase their knowledge of Australia. Corroboree is an annual training workshop taking place in Australia, which also presents the oppor- tunity for five-day fams across the country.

Chris exercised his newfound knowledge on the road as his training came to life. “The course is very comprehensive. You go into the geography and ground product, so when we were passing through certain regions I knew more about them and could hold an informed conversation with the people showing us around.”

Highlights for Chris included kayaking and spotting seals in San Fran- cisco Bay, motorised trike touring in Santa Barbara – “people stopped and stared as 16 of us whizzed by!” – and Hearst Castle, a land- mark where Hollywood stars used to party, but is now an art and antiques market. The group also took in the SAVOR food and wine festival and had a somewhat unsuccessful go at surfing, says Chris. Experiencing British Airways Club World, which he often sells, and getting to know a long-standing operator contact in his group, were two more unexpected benefits. “I’ve come back brimming with enthusi- asm to sell the destination again,” he says. “With the training, even if you haven’t been to California, you could confidently sell it, so it makes good business sense to do it.”
