This week’s contenders: high street v internet First Choice
Thomas Cook Clifton Down Shopping Centre
I was welcomed as I entered. The consultant who saw me seemed
genuinely interested in my enquiry. They involved me in the search process, asking my preferences as they researched the options. I was offered London-Hong Kong-Perth- Ayers Rock-Sydney-Singapore- London through Austravel for just slightly over budget. The consultant also attempted to sell me car hire and interest me in reserving hotels for part of the trip. I was impressed with the service, and they were friendly and eager to help.

The store was well presented and the agents seemed happy to help.
The consultant who helped me asked questions as required. I was suggested Lon- don-Auckland-Christchurch- Auckland-Hong Kong-London with Jet Airways. This deal was under budget but did not include North or South America. The agent also tried to sell me accommodation, car hire and hotel stays before the flight. The service was friendly and efficient. I would have been prepared to make a booking with this company.

This week’s winner: Travel Nation
Travel-nation.co.uk was able to offer the mystery shopper their perfect travel itinerary
Flight Centre’s site was easy to use but I needed to speak to an agent which I found less convenient. The service I received at both First Choice and Thomas Cook was good but I preferred on this occasion being able to browse the options at my leisure on the internet. I would therefore book with Travel Nation which found a perfect match. It was clear what was available and there were many routes. It was very useful to be able to search by selecting my budget first. I was offered flights departing Gatwick on June 20, 2011 returning December 8, 2011 and costing £2,464 for two.

This website was a sponsored link among the highest results. The site
was easy to navigate but I had to contact a branch to obtain a quote. There were prearranged itineraries on the site, which made me feel obliged to choose one. Under budget was London-Bangkok (make your own way) Singapore-Perth (make your own way) Sydney- Los Angeles (make your own way) San Francisco-London. I had to speak with an agent for further information. I was not urged to buy today and there was no attempt to sell extras.

Travel Nation

This website was one of the first non-sponsored results returned. There were many travel options on the home page and it was easy to navigate. Out of several suitable products one suited my needs entirely: Lon- don-Tokyo-Cairns-surface to Melbourne- Christchurch-sur- face to Auckland-Los Angeles- surface to San Francisco- London. It was only £64 over budget and although the web- site did not actively tempt me to book any extras (insurance was available), I would have booked on this site.
