IMPROVE YOUR COMMUNITY WITH AVAILABLE FUNDS FROM NAR
Did you know that you have the power and the resources to revitalize your community? REALTORS® across the country have been enhancing their local communities through small but significant projects designed to make their community a more desirable place in which to live. These projects include the construction of an all-abilities playground featuring rubberized surfaces and a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, community gardens, mini-parks, trails, and much more. What do these projects all have in common? They were made possible by NAR’s Placemaking Micro-grants.

WHAT IS PLACEMAKING?
Simply put, placemaking is turning underused space into a welcoming gathering place. Imagine showing buyers a property with a completely barren back yard. There is no deck to imagine entertaining friends, no flowers to tend to, and no fence for the dog. If the sellers want to add value to that property, most REALTORS® would advise them to start creating places by adding seating, landscaping, and anything that helps to define and improve that space. By defining the space, it becomes a place. This is placemaking.

Just as individual placemaking adds value to a property, community placemaking adds value to communities. There is a business incentive for REALTORS® to engage in this type of community outreach, since increased property values often lead to increased commissions.

Grants can often be time-consuming and the process itself may take months. However, the Placemaking Micro-grant application consists of only two pages and may be approved for up to $3,000 in as little as 10 business days.

THE PLACEMAKING PROCESS
Placemaking itself is easy. Generally, the most time-intensive part of placemaking is spent fleshing out ideas, not filling out the application or working on the project. A best practice recommendation for successful placemaking is to tap passionate members within a board and create a placemaking task force. The Atlanta REALTORS® and the Atlanta Commercial Board have a great example of a task force working together.
