Soundings
Phil Nuytten Publisher and Senior Editor G
et ready for some great articles this time ’round (not to say that our articles aren’t usually great, of course!) We really do cover some diverse ground in the
following pages – from diving a fl ooded mine in winter, courtesy of DIVER columnist Jill Heinerth, to the famous ‘Andrea Doria’ wreck from frequent ‘Doria’-diver Gary Gentile, to a technical paper on in-water recompression by US Navy Saturation Diving Offi cer (ret) Commander Joseph Dituri. Dituri’s piece marks a bit of a departure
from the usual, casual tone of this magazine, but the technical nature of the piece demanded a more ‘academic’ format. We bring it to you here, as originally published. As I point out in the brief intro, this may not be something that you ever have to (or should) do, but it IS a currently a hot topic, and as such, something we think is worth taking a look at. This issue’s Dive Medicine column on
that ol’ villain, Carbon Dioxide and what it does in the body, is in a similar vein. (Ha
ha, ‘vein’, get it? – ah, never mind.) As with most things, the more you know, the less apt you are to screw up! The usual columns are in the usual
places, adding to the ‘more you know’. This issue’s Final Cut is an excellent piece on setting up a basic video-edit suite. Speaking of video editing, Jim and Pat Stayer are seasoned veterans of video

production and old friends of mine. I had a chance to chat with them at this year’s New Jersey ‘Beneath the Sea’ show. When I was ready to head off to a seminar, Pat handed me a nicely packaged DVD and said, “I think you’ll really like this one. Watch for the fi sh that isn’t a fi sh!” The DVD was titled ‘CEPHALOPODS – HOW SMART ARE THEY?’ Like it? WOW, it was terrifi c! Particularly the ‘fi sh/no fi sh’ bit. I watched the fi shy piece several times
and it was just as surprising the last time as the fi rst. You can get your own copy by
going to:
www.outoftheblueproductions.net. Please tell them ‘Phil sent you’ – it won’t get you a discount, but it will let Jim and Pat know that I think their work is top-notch. And, last but most certainly not least, I
end this ‘Soundings’ by letting our readers know that DIVER editor Peter Golding has decided to retire for medical reasons. Peter has been with DIVER for decades; fi rst, on DIVER founder Peter Vassilopoulos’s watch, and for the last 12 years on mine. Peter, we all wish you the very best. We are pleased to have Russell Clark take over Peter’s duties as Editor. Russell’s behind- the-scenes work as Art Director for this fi ne mag will be familiar to readers. He does a bang-up job with the art department and we are confi dent that he will do a bang-up job on the editorial team. Hot again, and again I remind you: You
do know where’s it’s cool and refreshing, so it would be foolish not to put that ‘more things you know item’ to work for you.
Regards Phil
