This also applies to same- sex marriages, which have been
legal in New York City since 2011. Paperwork: The marriage licence application acts as an affidavit, with each party swearing there are no legal impediments to their nuptials, but couples must list any prior marriages and bring divorce or death certificates to prove they are free to marry, plus their passport as identification.
