industry market report However, the survey reports that whilst nine

in ten women are now taking their fitness more seriously, not all of the effects of this are positive, with almost a quarter of women suffering from persistent skin rashes and dermatitis, as well as odour and chafing which can lead to ‘joggers’ nipple’. According to leading dermatologist Dr Raj Mallipeddi explained: “When sweat or moisture gets trapped in skin folds, this leads to irritation and eventually dermatitis.” The problem is compounded by women’s increasingly busy lifestyles which mean almost half are leaving their gym kits on without getting changed or showered post workout. This is one of the main causes of skin rashes and dermatitis. As a consequence, almost a quarter of women have sought advice from a doctor, dermatologist or healthcare specialist.

Capitalise on the trend Based on the information gathered in this survey, retailers should find that fitness apparel that combines functionality with fashion is be popular with female consumers this year. Retailers should ensure they highlight the performance and comfort orientated characteristics of their stock. Savvy 30-something consumers will note materials and features that differentiate products. With social media integrally influencing purchasing decisions, ensuring that kit feels good and looks good too should ensure continued sales growth in the female fitness apparel category.
