ISPO Munich 2016

Arguably one of the top sports shows in the world, 80,000 visitors attended ISPO Munich from the 24 to 27 January this year. SGB journal manager Jill Williams and editor of SGB Outdoor Heather Ramsden were in attendance, and found the show busy and dynamic

2016 show: “Following the challenging pre- Christmas sales conditions, the mood was definitely better than expected. The plethora of innovations and new products presented at ISPO MUNICH further strengthened the confidence of the industry to be able to weather the latest challenges presented by climate and market structure changes.” SGB journal manager Jill Williams commented on her show experience: “ISPO Munich was incredibly busy; nearly everyone from the industry seemed to be there and from our point of view it was very successful. Exhibitors we spoke to seemed impressed with the quality of the visitors, although some said it wasn’t as busy as last year. It had a great buzz about it though, and a very friendly atmosphere. There were lots of new product launches - the one topic on everyone’s lips was the environment. Every company seemed to be doing their bit, one way or another, even to the point of changing the way they dye the materials so that they don’t use as much water.”

In with the new With new exhibitors in all segments, ISPO Munich once again revealed that there are myriad opportunities to be found in the sports industry. The Health & Fitness section in particular had positive feedback from both

exhibitors and visitors, and had more space at its disposal in this year in hall B4. ISPO Munich 2016 provided the ideal location

for a key development for the entire sporting goods industry. The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI), which represents 1,800 companies (about 85% of the European market), is intending to deepen the cooperation between the sporting goods industry and the European Commission. ISPO facilitated a meeting between CEOs from key sports business companies including Salomon, Nike, Adidas and Puma and representatives of the EU Commission, among them Andrus Ansip, vice president and commissioner for the Digital Single Market Initiative. The businesses highlighted and shared their requirements in terms of the digital single market with the politicians, with Dr. Gerd Müller, federal minister

of Economic Affairs and Development, reporting on the development of the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles, with the goal to improve the conditions in apparel manufacturing. Many of the guests at the meeting came from

far abroad; for example, the Brazilian Minister of Sports, George Hilton, who reported on the developments in his country in preparation for the Olympic Summer Games, to be held in Rio de Janeiro in August. A first for the show was the interactive

Moving forward, organisers plan to provide relevant industry information all year long, with a special editorial team managing the site and providing news and background reports from the world of sporting goods.
