Quality as well as quantity Boasting 80,000 visitors from 120 different countries this year, ISPO Munich is the world’s largest sports business exhibition. The 2016 show saw increased visitor numbers from Italy, Switzerland and Austria, as well as a large number of visitors from Russia and the Ukraine. 87% of visitors to the show were from outside the region, demonstrating the international nature of the show and the wide sphere of influence exhibitors can expect. The number of show exhibitors also saw another significant increase; 2,585 at the previous show became 2,645 exhibitors at this year’s event, with the entire 180,000 square meters of exhibition space (covering 16 exhibition halls) fully booked. Among the more prominent visitors were

FC Bayern Coach Pep Guardiola, as well as successful professional alpinist and this year’s ISPO Trophy recipient Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. Other notable visitors included former Olympic weightlifting champion Matthias Steiner; Philipp Lahm, FC Bayern captain; speed skater Claudia Pechstein; bike trial rider Danny MacAskill and two-time Olympic champion and five-time ski racing world champion Ted Ligety.

Performance trends Hall C4 hosted leading performance sports exhibitors, covering apparel, equipment and accessories for everything from classic team sports to racket sports and water sports. Exhibitors included Nike Vision, Asics, Harrows Darts, Runderwear, adidas and Unicorn, among others. A highlight of the section was the Runner‘s World running shoe symposium,

which focused on presenting new running products, events and target groups to retailers, researchers and sports journalists. The trend towards sustainable products and manufacturing processes noted by many visitors was particularly evident in Hall C3, which was dedicated to innovative fabrics, fibers and components, known as ‘Textrends’. The section is new for 2016, and provided manufacturers, designers and product managers with a great platform from which to source, network and learn about the latest textiles, insulating materials, components and accessories for sports and outdoor apparel.

This year, the topics of sustainability, social and ecological products as well as production have become much more relevant to the target audience. It makes us happy to see that due to our involvement Vaude has taken on a pioneering role at ISPO Munich 2016. We were very pleased by the direct and positive feedback from customers and journalists.”

“Textrends has already taken on a pioneering role on a global level – this is the only place you find all textile trends in such a compact and accessible presentation,” said an ISPO spokesperson. Exhibitors professed themselves satisfied with the event; Bernhard Ritzer, global brand director at O’Neill (Netherlands), commented: “We are very positively surprised by the frequency of visitors. ISPO simply is the industry get-together, and very important to revive old and gain new contacts. The exhibition is very interesting, compact, and

Retail education A regular highlight on the ISPO calendar, the ISPO Academy Conference at ISPO Munich 2016 hosted international speakers covering current topics and trends. Faced with a program that offered a wide variety of events and presentations revolving around sports, visiting retailers could attend lectures on current sports trends and issues affecting the industry, with digitalisation the primary focus of the lectures and debates. Day 1 saw Bernd Mayer of Serviceplan Consulting discussing the latest software solutions and brand-new technologies for point of sale in the interactive ‘Retail Labs 4.0’ session. He shared tips on how to add value to the retail supply chain via new digital concepts. On the second day of the show, retailers could attend a panel discussion entitled ‘Future Retail: Digital Innovation in sports retail’, whilst Wednesday’s highlight was ‘Opportunities in the digital age – a must for the whole economy’, which discussed the early identification of digital signs and to deal with them.
