LUBRICANTS & COOLANTS FEATURE MULTI-PURPOSE GEAR OIL FOR INDUSTRY
NCH Europe has launched a multi- viscosity, multi-purpose gear oil. Designed for most types of enclosed gear systems Top Blend is available in several grades including types 80W-90 and 85W-140, meeting the requirements for grades ranging from 80W-140W. Target applications include industrial, food and beverage, packaging, processing and automotive. With proper maintenance and when used in combination with NCH's Flush and Clean product before changing, Top Blend lasts up to four times longer than ordinary gear oils. It carries on working for around 8,000 hours in stationary equipment. Top Blend incorporates adhesive
polymers, tackifiers, anti-foam, anti- corrosive and anti-friction agents, emulsifiers, detergents, pour depressants, shock-load reducers and leak inhibitors. This powerful combination significantly improves component life, reducing downtime, labour costs and the frequency of parts replacement. Providing a high thermal stability, it ensures fewer oil changes and improves seal quality which reduces leaks. Subjected to stringent testing routines during development Top Blend meets or exceeds leading industry standards including API, AGMA, SAE, US Milspec and numerous OEM standards.

"We know that up to 70% of
mechanical gear-wear occurs on startup," explains VP of the lubricants and fuel additives innovation platform Mark Burnett. "Dry starts are responsible for wear such as cold-weld fusion, pitting and metal-particle contamination that can cause foaming, oxidation and the buildup of acidic compounds and sludge. "Top Blend adds a protective film to rubber seals which both conditions and reduces the chance of cracking and shrinking, traditionally a major cause of leakages. It coats the gears, ensuring good viscosity at startup that prevents mechanical wear. Customers have told us it is adding real value to their business in terms of tangible savings."

WATER-BASED COOLANT WARNING
Machine shops using water-based metalworking fluids are urged to initiate a regular system cleaning regime amid fears that too many operators are short- changing their cleaning processes in order to reduce machine downtime. The warning from Millers Oils concerns water-based coolants which are susceptible to bacterial growth that can severely impact fluid stability and its operational performance. “The issue is that operators all too often do not understand the necessity of system cleaning,” comments technical director Martyn Mann. “Insufficient cleaning is merely storing up problems for the future as dirty fluid will have contaminants including bacteria which feed upon the fluid, reducing its operational effectiveness and ultimately impacting machine performance, tool life and finished workpiece quality.” Mann recommends weekly monitoring and testing of metalworking fluid for both bacteria and pH value to ensure that the fluid remains in top condition allied to a regular cleaning regime and warns: “be careful to ensure that you are using a system cleaner compatible with the fluid and don’t ever put clean fluid in a dirty machine or sump.”
