ChinaChem pays €925m for KM
German plastics machinery group KraussMaffei is to be acquired by China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) for €925m. The Chinese state-owned
enterprise said the company, which includes the Krauss- Maffei, KraussMaffei Berstorff and Netstal brands, will retain its independence and identity. Current manufacturing locations will be maintained, with plans to increase headcount in 2016. “Together, ChemChina and the KraussMaffei Group will be positioned for future growth,” ChemChina chairman Jianxin Ren said in a statement. Ren said the German firm would benefit from improved access to the Chinese market under its ownership. KraussMaffei Group
employs 4,500 people globally (2,800 in Germany) and generated sales of around €1.1bn in the 2014 financial year. ChemChina employs 140,000 people (95,000 in China). Sales for 2015 amounted to €37bn. ❙

Italy’s Sirmax acquires Nord Color in €10m deal
Sirmax, headquartered at Cittadella near Padova in Italy, has acquired Nord Color, which is located at nearby San Vito al Tagliamento, in a deal valued at €10m. Nord Color employs 70 and
turns over some €35m annually. It produces mainly technical polymers for the automotive, E&E, construction, sport and leisure sectors. Sirmax is currently not active in technical polymers but company president Massimo Pavin said it is targeting the sector for the future. “We want to grow abroad and the Nord Color manage- ment, integrated with ours, will enable us to do so better,” said Pavin, who is also past president of the local industry body Confindu- stria Padova. Sirmax recorded dou-
ble-digit growth in 2015, with sales reaching €175m, while production grew from 108,000 to 132,000 tonnes. Nord Color acquisition will push sales to €260 and production of 175,000 tonnes in 2016, including 28,000 tonnes of technical polymers. “We have completely
reorganised ourselves, from Both Sirmax and
Nord Color are major suppliers to the
appliance industry
production modes to office organisation, changing our IT system,” Pavin said. “We have been able to grow our sales without increasing our fixed costs proportionately. This has enabled us to grow and we will continue to work this way.” Sirmax is the second
largest independent PP compounder in Europe. Formed out of the merger of Maxplast and Sirte in 1999, the company employs about 200 people. PP compounds account for around 85% of Sirmax output, with the remainder including PA 6 and 6,6, ABS, PC-ABS, POM, PBT and PPO materials. Around 50% of its production goes into the large appliance market, with the rest going to automotive (25% and growing), E&E and small
appliances, such as coffee makers.
Sirmax has three sites in
Italy (at Cittadella and Tombolo) as well as production operations at Kutno in Poland and Jundiaí in Brazil and sales subsidiaries in Germany, France and Spain. Sirmax also set up its first US production facility last year, a 13,000m2 facility at Anderson in Indiana. The unit is expected to produce 16,000 tonnes of compounds during 2016, generating sales of €24m. Nord Color dates back to 1980. It also mainly supplies the appliance industry, as well as transport, building, furniture and leisure. The bulk of its production is styrenics and technical compounds. ❙
