leptic properties mean less odour and taste issues in the fi nal fi lm and therefore less negative effects on the packaging contents.” Incroslip SL is said to provide both high slip perfor-

mance and long-term oxidative stability to protect against undesired changes in taste and colour in consumer-sensitive plastics applications, such as packaging fi lms. Where standard grade erucamides can lose slip performance after around four weeks of UV exposure, Incroslip SL maintains its slip performance for much longer, Downham says. Tosaf has introduced three permanent slip-antiblock masterbatches, which are designed to outperform amide-types where it claims the effect tends to fade away with time. “Moreover, since most migrating slip agents cease to function at elevated temperatures, the conveying of the sealed packages becomes problematic when hot content is being packed,” the company says. It adds that when corona treatment, printing or adhesives are applied, they can draw the slip agent away from fi lm’s surface, making the production and converting of fi lm even more challenging.

The three masterbatches, SB6484PE, SB1533PE and SB7553PE contain synergistic active ingredients that do not migrate. The fi rst is suitable for standard applica- tions where low and stable COF is required, SB1533PE is a modifi ed version for more transparent fi lms, and

SB7553PE is described as a second generation master- batch with superior COF properties that has been developed especially for laminated fi lms. It can also be used at around half the concentration of SB6484PE. In all cases, printability may be decreased on the skin side where the permanent slip is used (Figure 4). Ampacet highlights several masterbatches that

improve food preservation. These include Fresh+ 358 C2 (1000358-E), which extends the shelf life of packed fresh produce by capturing part of the ethylene emitted by fruit and vegetables, and Fresh+ 97 AF (103697), an optimised antifog designed for polyethylene food wrap fi lms intended for both hot and cold packaging. Ampacet says the masterbatch gives an excellent antifogging performance only a few minutes after the laminated fi lm is placed in the refrigerator and retains its properties even after 15 days. The company also claims that its UVBlock 347 (104347-A) “is the best existing solution for packaging UV-light sensitive food.” It says it provides a high barrier effi ciency to UV light even at low addition rates without affecting the transparency of the packaging fi lm.

Taking on static

AkzoNobel says it has “signifi cantly” expanded supply capabilities for its Armostat 2000 lauric diethanol amide (LDA) antistat. The product can be used in polyolefi ns and various other polymers, notably styrenics, and supply has been restricted for some months.

Armostat 2000 is said to be known for its fast action and extended durability as antistatic additive (Figure 5). AkzoNobel says that fast action is an important property during processing in order to reach high production speeds and to ensure a safer production environment. “Armostat 2000 has very high content of amide and low content of diethanol amine (<2%) compared to competi- tive products, which makes this product suitable for food applications (EU No.10/2011 and FDA approved),” the company points out.

Armostat 2000 is available as a solid block, particu- late solid and pellets (Armostat 2002) with high crushing strength that make them non-caking. Crushing strength is more than four times higher than one (unidentifi ed) rival product, AkzoNobel claims. ST7505HP is a newly developed antistatic master-
