improved high-speed data transmission. “Foamed fluoropolymers are typically used in data

cables, specifically where low dielectric constant or low dissipation factor are important. The foamed insulation allows for faster signal transmission with minimal loss,” says Katie Sprick, Product and Development Engineer, AGC Chemicals America. “Foamed fluoropolymers may also result in weight savings and the ability to reduce the size of cables and cable constructions.” A gas injected foam extrusion process is used to

produce foamed cable insulation.“The gas injection process allows the cable manufacturer to adjust the cell size and quantity and the nucleating agent assists in cell formation,” says Sprick. “The nucleating agent is properly compounded and distributed throughout the foam concentrate, allowing for greater control during the extrusion process.” AGC FluoroCompounds Group offers two grades of

standard FEP foam concentrates. Higher flow concen- trates are claimed to be well suited to thin wall applica- tions in LAN cables while lower flow foam concentrates are used for thicker coaxial cable wall constructions. The company says it can customise foam concentrates

to meet specific application parameters. “FEP is used due to its low dielectric constant versus ETFE because it withstands a greater voltage for a longer period of time thus preventing signal loss,” says Sprick. Fluon FEP foam concentrates are supplied in pellet

form for addition to natural FEP. AGC says they contain a well-dispersed nucleating agent that acts as a site for foaming during the gas injected foam extrusion process. According to the company, the foam concen- trates do not contain lead, hexavalent chromium or cadmium and are used in applications where RoHS (Restrictions on the use of Certain Hazardous Sub- stances) compliance is required.
