Riu launches €140m plan to expand into Maldives

Tui-owned chain Riu Hotels & Resorts has bought two islands in the Maldives as part of a €140 million project to open two hotels by 2018.
The plan, involving the acquisition of the islets of Kedhigandu and Maafushi in the Dhaalu Atoll, is part of the company’s expansion in Asia, which will be spearheaded by an opening in Sri Lanka next July. Riu will become the first Spanish hotel chain to have a presence in the Maldives. The two properties, which
are in the design stage, will be a 174-room Riu Palace and a 248-room Riu Classic. They will be joined by a
wooden walkway in a project the company admitted would be a “logistical challenge” with construction “unlike any other
