DON'T BE A DUMMY (CONTINUED)
“But as we know, there is a great deal of legacy equipment in the UK, without these systems fitted. So if the industry moves, as it looks like from the recent Skanska announcement, to 360 degree visibility on all major sites, there will be an issue with equipment compliance and a need to retrofit relevant technology.
“Fortunately, this retrofit service is a simple process and one that can in some cases also be done onsite. From my own perspective, I am personally very encouraged with the reaction to date to the new guidance from the industry, but there is still a great deal more to do with both awareness and practical training.
“Ultimately as an industry, we are responsible for the lives of the people that work onsite, both in and around mobile plant.
It is therefore vital that we all work to eliminate tragic or life changing injuries and not forget those operators that have to live with the knowledge that their actions have caused harm to others. This is especially the case with operators that have followed safe practice, only to be part of an incident caused by unsafe acts by others.
So if there is one thing I would say to both businesses and individuals, it is to not be afraid to act or ask the question when going to a site, “Does your plant use in-cab 360 degree visibility systems” as the more the question is asked, the greater will be the move to safer working.
