DON'T BE A DUMMY (CONTINUED)
...of the early adopters in the plant sector, Flannery Plant Hire has not only used such systems, but also combined them with other features, like automatic cut off switches to enhance onsite safety. An approach I would also encourage in the wider industry.
“Having witnessed numerous demonstrations of safety systems, including 360 visibility, I think the most powerful and shocking experience is one developed by Balfour Beatty, with its live demonstration area. Quite rightly, manufacturers have embraced the technology needed and the visual aids for safety zones and methods of approaching plant, but nothing compares to thelive ‘Dummy’ experience I witnessed.
“For me, just walking around the exclusion zone before the demonstration began, using one of the Flannery Cat M313D’s that operates on the close by live site, was an experience in itself. Split into the red, amber and hashed safe zone, the whole area is just so big, compared to what you think it should be.
“This is why I would encourage contractors and clients responsible for sites using mobile plant, to take the time out to demonstrate safe working practices, using practical exclusion zone training, particularly in highway and confined space applications.
“I would also encourage the plant hire sector to take the lead in supporting such training and toolbox talk initiatives, as; Flannery has done with Balfour Beatty. From an equipment dealer perspective, we also have our role to play, as does Caterpillar who is constantly developing new, safer equipment.
