WHAT’S HOT!

Packing prototyping is one way printers can use 3D printing in the production workflow. Using software like IC3D Suite from CGS-ORIS, users create 3D models of packaging designs that can then be printed using a multicolor 3D printing device.

Partnering with UPS, Free built a manufacturing facility housing 100 |custom-made 3D printing devices directly on the WPS WorldPort campus in Louisville, KY. This close proximity to the overnight delivery power- house gives CloudDDM an extra several hours per day of production time, making it possible to deliver physical parts at unheard-of speeds. The model is very similar to that of 2D printer Mimeo.com with their proximity to the FedX hub in Memphis, TN.

It’s interesting that UPS partnered with Free and CloudDDM, considering the company has placed 3D printing devices in 100 UPS stores around the country. Free says that indeed, there is a synergy between these efforts and that CloudDDM can send 3D printing files directly to UPS stores to be output locally there—so it uses both print-and-ship and ship-and-print models to get parts to users as rapidly as possible. But Free’s dream goes much farther than this. “I want to build a global manufacturing cloud, networked world-wide,” he says, “so that parts can be distributed where- ever they are needed.” Sounds like Amazon for parts, and that is indeed what Free has in mind.

What About PSPs? So what does this mean for printers? With entrepreneurs like Free build- ing “Amazon”-like experiences for 3D printed products, is there any room for commercial printers to get into this largely manufacturing- related space. Free believes there is. “Manufacturing is enormous,” he claims, “and there is plenty of room for other suppliers. No one company could begin to support more than a fraction of it.” Free cites the fact that commercial printers have the infrastructure to become 3D printing man- ufacturing facilities. While the file types and printers are different, they’re sufficiently similar—looking at income digital files, preflighting them, and printing them. It’s what CloudDDM is doing. Could you do it too?
