breaks down, resulting in poor matches and unpredictable color with excessive waste and makeready time. The more items that can be standardized within the production—from the substrates through to consumables used—will aid greatly the predictability of the prints.

It should not be ignored that there are very valid reasons for using completely separate workflows for producing product. This can be to fully optimize the production workflow or to allow for close interaction with the customer. During the planning stages, the actual press that will be used to produce the work will be decided, with bespoke services and added value offered to their customers by using unique solutions, and these will continue to be a viable option.

Conclusion The workflow utilized is ultimately a decision based on the customer expectations for the product, however we will continue to see a shift towards a more integrated solution with the decision on the printing process being made later in the production workflow. As this change happens, there will be increased automation using logic-based decisions to make all of the steps more efficient, cost-effective, and predictable. There are many tools that are available from many of the manufacturers that make this a reality today and not limited to the large companies with IT development staff.
