TECHNOLOGY


Commercial sheetfed presses have been increasingly using flexographic units for the coating units, allowing the addition of variable coating applications using flexographic printing plates which offer higher resolution. The cold foiling applications have utilized this capability to apply glues in specific areas to facilitate inline operations. Further- more, digital has long been used for addressing applications, but is now available for adding high quality graphics/text and is also used for quality control while integrated with image inspection. In this case, each sheet can be printed and the rejected image on a sheet compris- ing of multiple packages can be identified and rejected, as opposed to the whole sheet which in many cases would lead to stopping the press and remaking new plates.


Conclusion As the workflows and controls improve we will increasing see new applications for hybrid press designs, utilizing the best characteristics and economics from each process to produce effective and profitable products.
