As for slalom, racers apply six basic elements: Rearick envisions a future in which youth racing programs
1. Balance and an athletic stance, so the skier can move in any direction at any time
2. Skiing outside ski to outside ski 3. Maintaining a stable upper body
4. A commitment to maintain the skis’ contact with the snow
5. Early leg engagement, particularly in the ankle and lower leg, which allows racers to pressure their skis in the fall line
6. A good pole plant for recovery, rhythm, and timing
provide an equal amount of coaching and instruction. He remarked on a ski race he observed in New Zealand, in which more than 80 kids ran the course but had no scoreboard at the bottom. “T e race ended at 12:30, and nobody knew who won,”
said Rearick. “But the coach told them all how well they did, and then suggested aspects of their skiing that they might want to work on. T e rest of the day, they went out skiing and worked on those things.” In closing, he said, “I know at many areas there is still a
diff erence in the culture between instructors and the race programs, but we can all work to change that culture. T ere’s not one that is better than the other, and the more we work together the more we can work for the benefi t of everyone.”
WORKING TOGETHER TO BENEFIT ALL Rearick said he strongly encourages USSA coaches to consider attaining PSIA-AASI certifi cation, and believes instructors could also benefi t from attaining coaching accreditation. “Working 100 percent is fun,” he said, “and so is overcoming setbacks. We need to teach our young skiers to love competition.”
Peter Kray is the lead content offi cer for PSIA-AASI, focusing on emerging ski and snowboard trends and on-snow innovations. He skis, telemarks, and snowboards out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is the author of The God of Skiing (
