What Racers Can Learn from Instructors T e most elite racers have a command over the entire chain of events – they know what to do with their bodies to get the skis to perform how they’d like. However, many racers – even accomplished ones – do not. Understanding exactly how their bodies move in order to get the desired ski the

neuropathways

performance can strengthen between

the brain

and body, improve the communication channels between athlete and coach, and make video analysis of their own skiing much more productive which leads to higher performance skiing. Simply put , for both groups , understanding cause and eff ect (Body movement X causes ski performance Z and vice versa) is likely to improve the overall performance on snow. While watching World Cup Alpine racing on television, a good friend of mine often exclaims, “Wow! If that’s what skiing is supposed to look like, then what the heck am I doing?!” He knows that at the most basic levels, we’re all doing the same things. As an accomplished Level III instructor for many years, he understands the skiing fundamentals listed above. He also realizes that the execution of those movements – how those fundamentals are being applied on the World Cup – is very diff erent from the everyday turns he makes with his students. Racers interpret and apply those fi ve fundamentals to meet their goal to generate speed. Instructors do so to meet the goals that they have for their students. T e what is the same, the how is diff erent. Ski instructors and ski racers, although

diff erent in some ways, are all skiers and can learn a lot from each other. Whether they wear a ski school uniform or a speed suit, the essential elements are the same. Good skiing is just good skiing.
